About NCFOR

Welcome to NCFOR!

Our Purpose

Prioritize the use of domestic salt to ensure a consistent supply for winter road maintenance, guaranteeing the safety of travelers and first responders.

Our Mission

NCFOR is the only coalition uniting producers, transporters, snow fighters, researchers, and policymakers with one mission: Safe and Open Roads.

Our Members

Our membership includes leading producers, distributors, transporters, snow fighters, equipment and technology innovators, researchers, chambers of commerce, associate service providers, and partner organizations, together shaping the policies and practices that keep America moving.

Safety

Snow and ice on roads can be dangerous, leading to preventable accidents. Research from the Federal Highway Administration suggests that over 1,300 people lose their lives and more than 116,800 are injured annually in crashes on snowy, slushy, or icy roads (FHWA Road Weather). Icy road fatalities are significantly higher than other weather-related deaths. Treating roads with de-icing solutions can reduce crashes by up to 90%, injuries by 85%, and accidents by 85%, often recovering costs quickly by keeping traffic moving and saving lives.

Economy

When snow makes roads impassable, it can disrupt local economies. Evidence suggests a single day of road closures may cost a state between $300 million and $1 billion in lost productivity (American Highway Users Alliance). These disruptions often hit lower- and middle-income workers hardest, especially those paid hourly. Proactive road treatment helps keep businesses running and supports economic stability during winter storms.

Environment

Effective road treatment is essential for safe and accessible roads while also protecting our environment. We support the responsible use of de-icing agents, including traditional road salt, with approximately 20 million tons used annually in the U.S. (Penn State Extension). To enhance sustainability, we promote advanced application technologies and best practices that optimize de-icing efficiency, alongside exploring alternative materials. These efforts help ensure that road treatments support both community needs and environmental health.
